State lawmakers said U.S. Highway 281 may get a facelift.

The Texas Transportation Commission met in Austin last week where they voted on how to use $100 million in federal stimulus dollars and bond money.

The commission decided to to build overpasses and bypasses on Highway 281 in Falfurrias, Ben Bolt and George West.

The agency also agreed to spend $36 million on a toll corridor linking the Port of Brownsville to FM 511 and FM 3248 in Cameron County.

Texas State Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa told the Rio Grande Guardian that he was involved in negotiations with TxDOT to secure the funding.

"Highway 77 and Highway 281 are very much a key to the continued growth of the economy, not only in the Valley but in the whole state," Hinojosa told the Guardian.
