AUSTIN, TEXAS -- Three lawmakers who represent the Rio Grande Valley have laid out bills to establish a four year medical school in the valley.
Representative Eddie Lucio, Representative Armando Martinez and Representative Aaron Peña all made the medical school issue their number one legislative agenda item on Wednesday in Austin.
Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell, who was also at the Capitol to testify, said the valley is the most medically underserved area in the nation.
"We have half the doctors per thousand population than the rest of the state has, and in certain instances, much less than that," explained Boswell.
Boswell said Harlingen leaders were setting up a foundation to raise funds for the medical school.
The house panel will vote on the bills sometime this legislative session.
