WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Henry Cuellar announced Monday that several housing authorities in Hidalgo county will receive $1.847 million under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
President Barack Obama signed the act into law earlier this month.
The breakdown for the county is as follows:
• McAllen Housing Authority: $384,653
• Mission Housing Authority: $460,835
• Pharr Housing Authority: $759,510
• La Hoya Housing Authority: $115,048
• Hidalgo County Housing Authority: $127,056
Congressman Cuellar was a prominent supporter of the recovery legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The bill directed critical new funds to local housing authorities for the modernization and renovation of public housing, including safety repairs.
The money will be used to upgrade HUD-sponsored low-income housing in order to improve living conditions for residents and lower operating costs.
The funds are distributed under the Recovery Act Capital Fund Formula Program, which uses existing funding formulas to target dollars to housing authorities across the nation.
