AUSTIN, TEXAS -- A Rio Grande Valley senator has recommended the state of Texas take advantage of extra unemployment insurance benefits available as part of the stimulus package.

Currently, more than $555 million are up for grabs.

During a news conference Tuesday, District 27 Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. explained that the state should take the money because lives are at risk.

"If we don't take action and fix this problem now, I shudder to think what people are going to do," said Sen. Lucio.  "Already, we've had people take their own lives and their family's lives in other parts of the country."

As a member of the finance committee, Sen. Lucio also said he is working to ensure Texas gets more than $4 billion in stimulus money for health care.
