MCALLEN, TEXAS -- Rio Grande Valley law enforcement agencies learned there is more to their jobs than handling weapons and busting the bad guys.
Wednesday in McAllen, officers participated in a class that taught them how to build public trust.
The lesson was based on the proven principles found in Stephen Covey's best-selling book, "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People."
Under the law enforcement program derived from Covey's principles, officers learned how to take initiative and responsibility, develop mission, vision and values, balance key personal and professional priorities, improve interpersonal communication and increase trust and teamwork in the organization and within the community.
"Basically personal growth, leadership and just being able to manage and prioritize your time better," explained Sgt. James Powers with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department. "Those things make you a more effective person."
