A Harlingen man is behind bars after he allegedly sexually assaulted a girl over a four-year period.
Harlingen police said their investigation started when received the tip from those close to the victim.
Detectives said 31-year-old Jose Luis Martinez, Jr. reportedly confessed to the crime.
According to the victim, the sexual abuse started when she was 8 years old and continued for about four years.
Martinez is being held at the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center on a $40,000 dollar bond.
Harlingen Police Sgt. Miriam Anderson said it is very important for people to come forward in these cases.
She said the identities of both the victims and those who make the outcry will be protected.
"A phone call can save a life," she said.
