Police are still trying to determine the motive for Gonzalez's crime spree.

We're getting a perspective into what would have driven someone over the edge like this.

This case involves a kidnapping, several carjackings, a murder inside a busy grocery store, a crash into a crowded retail store, and a suicide.

Thursday Action 4 news got insight from a local expert who examines crimes like these around the country.

Following the New Year's Eve tragedy, many people have been trying to understand what was going in the mind of accused killer Moises Gonzalez.

When he fatally shot his girlfriend in a Harlingen H-E-B and then killed himself inside a Weslaco Wal-Mart.

Dr. Susan Ander is an expert on analyzing the psychological and social make-up of perpetrators.

"You start with the kidnapping and then from there it becomes a human volatile cocktail... And we go from desperation to more desperation" said Ander.

It's unknown if Gonzalez was under the influence of drugs or if he had an undiagnosed mental condition.

"This point we have to remember his childhood. What were the preceding factors? Was he obessional? Was he the ultimate stalker who had to have this woman and eventually realized he was cornered?"

Dr. Ander adds holiday depression could have been another trigger.

She says it’s also important to remember that everyone who witnessed the crimes are also victims.

"They're going through a lot of trauma because they have experienced a lifestyle event that nobody else has experienced. They've either been afraid for their own life or seen someone else's life taken. It's a very traumatic experience and they would do well to seek some help if they are having nightmares, flashbacks or just need to process and talk about it."

Not seeking help could be unhealthy.

"One caution is that sometimes in talking to family and friends, they'll say well I would have done things differently or I would have intervened. Nobody knows what they would do when they are faced with a crisis" stressed Dr. Ander

Harlingen police Thursday said they're still investigating the motive, Gonzalez' criminal history and whether he was under the influence of drugs.

Family members tell us Maura Marroquin and Gonzalez had been in an on again, off again relationship for about 7 months.
