Cameron County commissioners are deciding who will be the next Precinct 1 Constable.
Jose "Joe" Maldonado, Jr. took over after Constable Saul P. Ochoa was convicted on federal drug trafficking charges.
Maldonado won the November election only to resign from the post shortly after.
The newly-elected constabled he was accused of getting drunk and letting a friend fire his county-issued weapon during a party.
Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos told Action 4 News that commissioners are accepting applications for Maldonado's job throught Dec. 31.
Cascos said county leaders hope to have the position filled by Jan. 1.
