Two people are dead and three are remain hospitalized following a fatal Sunday afternoon crash in Harlingen.

The accident happened around 4 p.m Sunday off U.S. Expressway 77 and Wilson Road.

Investigators said a Jeep Grand Cherokee carrying five people hit a palm tree near the Wilson Road exit ramp.

William Bilokury with the Harlingen Police Department said the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

"We have a couple of fatalities and we have some serious injuries we're working this like a regular crime scene," Bilokury said.

In the meantime, Bilokury said Harlingen police are encouraging drivers to slow down and drive safely during the holiday season.
