BROWNSVILLE -- The price of oil is down and sending relief to drivers filling up.

But that's not so for those who hit the road the most.

In Brownsville on Monday, Action 4 News found gas going for $1.97 a gallon while stations in Harlingen were selling it for as low as $1.93 per gallon.

But the life blood of the trucking industry, diesel, is selling for much more -- at $3.18 a gallon.

Diesel's not dropping as fast and Rio Grande Valley motorists have noticed.

Action 4 News caught up with area resident Benny Errisuriz filling his tank Monday.

"Its nice, especially in this truck," he said, pointing to his Ford F250.

For him, $1.97 is a nice price to pay but he hasn't overlooked the price right beside it.

Diesel's going for a whole $1.20 more.

"That doesn't help its still too high," he said.

Truck driver Helder Dias said he's well aware of diesel prices.

"When I come to Texas, I put my diesel here because look, $3.18, you can't get it cheaper anywhere else," he said.

In a time when $3.18 is a bargain for truckers, consumers and drivers like Benny will also pay the price for higher fuel not in their tanks but at the stores.

"The price of gas is dropping, but not the price of food or eggs or milk or anything," Errisuriz said.

That's because diesel is what's getting those items there.

"I do a lot of Wal-Marts, a lot of grocery stores as long as it's not perishable," explained Dias.

For now, truckers have to just grin and bear it.

"If the barrel of gas of crude oil is dropping, I don't know why diesel's not," Errisuriz asked.

Dias agreed.

"I remember two to three years ago, the diesel was cheaper than gas, then all the sudden, diesel went up," he said.

That means, for now, you and me will pay too.

"Its both, us and the consumers," said Dias.

Across Texas, Triple A says diesel gas is running $1.00-$1.20 more expensive than regular unleaded.

Regardless some drivers in Brownsville tell us at $3.18, diesel gas is running the lowest they've seen in recent months.

Diesel fuel remains cheaper south of the border but customs officials carefully monitor extra quantities and commercial use.
