A day of fun at the carnival ended with a shower of bullets for a family that decided to eat dinner at a Mission restaurant.
The family told Action 4 News that wanted to remain anonymous for their own safety.
But they said they a decision to eat at a Whataburger off U.S. Expressway 83 in Mission changed their sense of security.
They said several rounds of gunshots rang out mere seconds after parking their car near the front door of the popular restaurant.
"Real terrifying I had my kids right there in the car," said a terrified mother of two. "We just heard the shots and everybody just ducked."
The older boy described hearing what sounded like "claps".
"The girl says, 'It's a gun. It's a gun' and everybody ducked down like fast," he said.
They said everyone in the store hit the ground.
"My first reaction was to put my little sister's head down I looked and I just saw a car peel out and saw that there was a bullet hole and everyone was down," the older brother recalled.
Luckily, the bullet missed the car by a few feet but two rounds did go through the Whataburger’s window.
The mother told Action 4 News that one bullet barley missed her.
The Mission Police Department surveyed the area but investigators still don't know who or why someone opened fire outside the Whataburger.
Investigators told Action 4 News they found several bullet casings along the expressway.
The mother told Action 4 News that those random shots are a foolish act that could easily have cut innocent lives short.
Mission police are asking for the public's help in finding the owners of an older model Ford Crown Victoria used in the shooting.
Anyone with information in the case, is asked to call Mission Crime Stoppers at (956) 581-TIPS.
