Palmview police charged a Hidalgo County man with the death of his girlfriend's unborn baby.

Investigators said the woman went to Toys Auto Sales about two weeks ago to meet 42-year-old Juan Antonio Avilez.

The two apparently argued over money and that's when police say Avilez allegedly pushed the woman and kicked her stomach.

Palmview police spokesman Lenny Sanchez said the woman was 18 weeks pregnant and miscarried as a result of the attack.

"Initially we were going to charge the suspect with aggravated assault but through the investigation we found out that we could charge him with murder for the death of the unborn child," said Sanchez.

Avilez was formally charged for murder on Thursday where a municipal judge set bond at $1.2 million dollars.

Sanchez said an investigation into the incident continues but he added that someone who witnessed the car lot attack could also face charges.
