A South Texas lawmaker has filed a bill to lower the drinking age to 18 years old for men and women who are considered active duty military.

Texas State Rep. J.M. Lozano (D-Kingsville) filed House Bill 892 on Friday morning.

The bill proposes to lower the drinking age for alcohol from 21 years old to 18 years old for active duty military personnel.

Lozano said he saw many 18 to 20 years in his district serving in the military overseas and then not being able to drink alcohol while back home.

"If you're old enough to die for your country, you ought to old enough to drink a beer," Rep. Lozano said in a telephone interview.

Lozano said the bill will be assigned to be discussed in a legislative committee before it can be moved on the floor of the House of Representative for debate.

"I look forward to the discussions with my fellow lawmakers and members of the community regarding this bill," Lozano said.
