A shake-up made its way to the city of McAllen. After eight years, Mayor Richard Cortez  decided not to run for re-election.

He announced it early Thursday at the “State of the City”.

It was an emotional announcement for Mayor Cortez as he gets ready to step down after eight years and hand the reigns over to someone else.

Mayor Richard Cortez said he knows there is still much work to be done in McAllen.

Some work that he's started and now won't be able to finish.

But said he's confident that whoever takes over will be able to pick up where he left off and lead McAllen in the right direction.

Cortez said he's spent the last eight years dedicating his time to the city and now he needs to focus on family.

While it was a hard decision to make, he's knows for him, it's the best one he can make at this time.

During a press conference, Cortez eluded to the fact that he has some qualified people he'd like to see run for the position, but ultimately it will be the people of McAllen who decide.

Cortez said he will fulfill the remainder of his term and work to get as much done in a short period of time as he can.
