A shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut on Friday morning has taken the lives of at least 27 people; 20 of them were children.
The realization of this tragedy has left people in the Valley speechless.
"I feel sad for the parents,” said Jose Lopez. “Sad for the community, sad overall."
People eating lunch at Don Beto's in Harlingen could not believe what they were seeing on the TV screen.
"All in all, in the nation, we are on some kind of horrible trend where these things are becoming more of a regular happening, and that's not a good thing,” said Hoss Alvarez. “So something's wrong."
Sally Gonzalez said she has seen her share of deaths as a Justice of the Peace in Cameron County, but cannot imagine the horror of a tragedy to this magnitude.
"When I have to go do death calls on children, it just breaks my heart,” said Gonzalez. “I don't know how I would be able to handle a call of this nature."
People say although this tragedy has made them want to hold their little ones a little tighter, they are confident school officials here in the valley will do all they can to keep children safe.
"I know that our schools are doing everything they can to lock down and provide programs to protect them,” said Lopez. “I hope this never happens anywhere here."
