A security guard, a coach and an assistant principal are being credited with saving a man whose car plunged into a canal during a Wednesday morning accident.

It happened at a canal next to Mercedes High School just before 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Mercedes Police Chief Olga Maldonado spoke to Action 4 News about the accident.

Chief Maldonado said the driver suffered from medical problems and accidently drove his car into the canal.

Maldonado said a security guard and a junior high coach rushed in to get the man out of the car and get him to safety.

No charges are expected to be filed in the accident.
