A bill that would bring a medical school to the Rio Grande Valley has passed in the Texas State Senate.

Lawmakers heard Senate Bill 24 on the floor of the State Senate on early Wednesday afternoon.

The bill seeks to merge UTPA and UTB but also create a medical school in the Valley.

Just last week, the bill got green lights from state auditors and the Senate's Higher Education Committee.

The easily passed the Texas State Senate but now a companion bill is expected to be heard on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives on Tuesday, March 19th.

Texas State Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa (D-Edinburg) said if signed into law, the historic bill will transform the Valley.

"I am proud of the tremendous bipartisan support that was shown in the Senate and I am honored to serve with legislators who have come together to invest in education and in the people of South Texas," Hinojosa said in a statement.
