(AP) -- AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Gov. Rick Perry said he hopes the Boy Scouts of America doesn't move soften its mandatory no-gays membership policy.

The Republican addressed an annual gathering of Scouts from around Texas on Saturday.

Asked about the policy afterward, he said "I think most people see absolutely no reason to change" it.

Perry's 2008 book "On My Honor" details his love for the Scouts and why the group should continue to embrace conservative values.

Profits from it went to the Boy Scouts of America Legal Defense since "they continue to be under attack from the forces of secularism."

The Boy Scouts reaffirmed the no-gays policy seven months ago. But the group now says it may allow different religious and civic groups sponsoring Scout units to each decide how to address the issue.
