BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (AP) -- A South Texas couple have been sentenced to prison for running a drug distribution ring that moved cocaine provided by a Mexican cartel to a St. Louis street gang.

Tuesday in Brownsville, U.S. District Judge Hilda Tagle sentenced the husband and wife from Harlingen.

Thirty-year-old Norma Alicia Gallegos was sentenced to more than nine years and 32-year-old Jose Carlos Aguilar to 14 years.

Prosecutors said the couple took cocaine from the Gulf cartel and transported it to the Black Mafia Family gang in St. Louis. Gallegos also employed her sister and brother.

Drug Enforcement Administration agents intercepted one 25-kilogram load of cocaine bound for St. Louis in mid-2011. Agents tracked another load later that year. The couple pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine last year.
