The Texas Safety Act would all taxpayers to vote on whether or not they want to their taxes raised in order to provide more protection for students while at school.

One Valley police agency told Action 4 News, while it is a good idea he believes local police can do the job without raising taxes, departments just need to learn to work together.

"All of our hostage negotiators, all of our members of the SWAT teams..we're trying to coordinate them all together,” San Juan Police Chief Juan Gonzalez explained during a SWAT training. “If we respond, it's going to be a massive response from law enforcement, but we need to make sure we have our action plans on how we're going to respond and secure our safety measures as well."

In a school shooting type of situation multiple agencies will respond, Gonzalez said.

That means they all have to be on the same page so mistakes are not made.

"In the PSJA area we're going to have a Tri-City response. Three different police departments with three different ways of doing thing,” Gonzalez said. “This way, we're going to focus on one response and that should be effective compared to different responses. We could be part of the chaos and we don't want to do that."

As for whether or not teachers should be allowed to carry guns on campus, Gonzalez said no.

He said that will only add to the chaos in an active shooter is on the prowl.

"It's only going to add to the chaos and then we're not going to know who the active shooter in those types of cases."

While there might be several options on the table, Gonzalez said, for now, they will continue to train and is the situation arises they will be ready and able to handle it.
