A 6-year-old boy is fighting for his life following a Christmas Eve accident that ended with his father behind bars.

Pharr police arrested 31-year-old Pedro Ibarra on an intoxication assault charge on Monday evening.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Ibarra was behind the wheel of a car that rear-ended an 18-wheeler.

The accident happened on the frontage road of U.S. Highway 281 near Nolana Avenue.

Police said Ibarra’s 6-year-old son was trapped inside the car and now remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Investigators said Ibarra refused to submit to a breathalyzer but was required to take a blood test.
