Tire markings and spilled paint mark the spot on Highway 100 near Los Fresnos where 18-year-old Norma Castillo Olguin and 44-year-old Gabriel Vela lost their lives.

According to authorities Olguin was headed towards the Port Isabel area in an Impala, while Vela was driving his pick-up, along with two other men.

It was just past Bob's World, according to authorities, that Olguin veered into Vela's lane, causing the fatal crash.

The woman's grandparents Bert and Maria Kaempffe visited the site today.

"The car was just completely demolished,” Bert Kaempffe said. “You couldn't even tell what kind of a car it was anymore.”

Maria Kaempffe said her granddaughter was a Jehovah’s Witness and participated in the door to door missions, talking to people about their religion.

"She was a very good girl,” the grandmother said. “She was studying radiology and was just awaiting her license to work."

According to Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District Spokesperson Ronnie Zamora, Vela was very active in the Villarreal Elementary School Parent Teacher Association. He was supposed to be the school's hawk mascot in a parade scheduled for Saturday.

Department of Public Safety Sgt. Johnny Hernandez said they are still trying to figure out why the woman veered into oncoming traffic, but he said drivers need to stay focused on the road when they're behind the wheel.

"We need to slow down, we need to wear our safety belts, we need to be conscious that when it comes to driving, it's about driving,” Hernandez said. “It's not about distractions, about the radio - it's about driving."

DPS authorities tell Action 4 all the passengers, including the two victims, were wearing seatbelts. Two men remain hospitalized.
