More than 45 pounds of cocaine and thousands of dollars were seized by the Cameron County Sheriff's Department on Friday.

Sheriff Omar Lucio said it happened around noon during a traffic stop on Paredes Line Road in Brownsville.

The cocaine is estimated to have a value of more than $708,000.

Thousands of dollars were packaged in bundles of $10's, $20's, and $100, along with the 16 bundles of cocaine.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said given the recent hire of 13 new deputies and the addition of a new canine, the department has more resources to make arrests.

The vehicle was pulled over after a traffic violation around noon on Friday.

Lucio said there were four men in the vehicle and the driver became increasingly nervous as the deputy questioned him.

Upon further investigation, the deputy discovered the load.

"By the use of those dogs and the additional 13 officers out there for the same purpose, we are able to do that,” said Lucio. “We are checking on the main travel highways that we figure that some of these people use, but by the same token we also check out the rural areas, because they sometimes like to work the back roads"

Lucio said the suspects destination is still undetermined, but all four men were arrested.

The names of the four suspects have not yet been released but Sheriff Lucio said they could be looking at charges of possession of cocaine, intent to distribute and money laundering.

The total amount of cash has not yet been determined. It will have to be counted at a bank.

Federal authorities are assisting in this case.
