Texas Department of Safety has confirmed to Action 4 News that 44-year-old Gabriel Vela of Brownsville has died from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident on highway 100 in Los Fresnos.

Vela was the driver in the pickup truck that was hit head-on by an oncoming car on Thursday.

It all happened on Highway 100 near County Road 539 around 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

State troopers reported that a grey Chevy Impala, driven by 18-year-old Norma Castillo-Olguin, was heading east when it suddenly swerved into oncoming traffic on the westbound lanes.

The car hit the GMC truck Vela was driving, along with two other males.

Vela's family says one of the other passengers is being flown to San Antonio for surgery. The men are from the Olmito/Los Fresnos area.

It is still not clear why Castillo-Olguin lost control of her vehicle but the crash remains under investigation.
