The drive from Raymondville to Waco is about 400 miles, or 7 hours.
Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence said somehow Larry Jones drove that distance without knowing he’d ever left Waco.
Sheriff Spence said, “"He still thinks he is somewhere close to Waco which is a problem."
Jones was stopped by a DPS trooper on Friday for driving too slow.
He was pulled over just north of County Line 5. After speaking to the elderly man, the trooper knew something was wrong and decided to bring him to the sheriff department.
Once there, deputies searched the man's cell phone, finally able to make contact with a sister.
After speaking with the sister, she asked the deputies not to let her brother leave the building.
Sheriff Spence said, "Since family members are on their way, we are deciding to keep him here he'll be safe we will keep an eye on him."
For a second they couldn’t find him after searching high and low for Jones.
Sheriff Spence said the man locked himself in the restroom for several hours.
Sheriff Spence said, "We’ve had some strange things happen over the years but this is a little bit different; that’s the thing about this job there’s something different all the time."
Jones is now under 24 hour surveillance until his family arrives.
