The Humane Society of Harlingen is typically a temporary home for stray animals, run purely on donations and a small stipend from the city.

They are facing an overcrowding problem and worry the Holidays could make it worse.

Manager Frank Quinones says the Humane Society is seeing a new trend.

"It seems this year we've had a lot more animals that are surrendered by owners than actually come in as strays," he says.

Quinones says many people will get a puppy or kitten and after a few weeks or months realize it's not for them and turn it over to the Humane Society.

He says do the research before you get a pet.  Know the breeds, know how large the animal will get, and know exactly what you need.

Quinones tells Action 4 News if you plan on getting a pet chose adoption over purchase.

Not only will you save a life, but you'll free up room for other needy animals.

If you plan on buying a pet as a gift the Humane Society offers a gift certificate.  You can pay the fees and the other person can pick their own pet out.

You can learn more about researching and adoption by going to www.harlingenhumanesociety.org.
