Authorities in Edinburg are planning strict enforcement of a new ordinance that requires that sex offenders post a "No Candy" sign outside their homes during Halloween.
Edinburg city officials reported that police will be out in full force monitoring sex offenders who are not required by the terms of their probation or parole to report to a specified location on October 30th and 31st.
Those sex offenders are required by a new city ordinance passed in August to remain at their residence from 4 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. with all exterior lights turned off and a 9.5” by 11” sign with 2” letters that reads “NO CANDY” posted on their front door.
Police are expected to visit each home to make sure that sex offenders are complying with the ordinance.
Sex offenders who do not comply with the ordinance shall be charged with a misdemeanor and upon conviction be fined up to $2,000 for each offense.
The City of Edinburg ordinance is aimed at protecting the health, safety and welfare of citizens by clarifying provisions restricting the attendance or presence of sex offenders at schools or children oriented facilities.
