The Cameron County District Attorney's Office has placed its top prosecutor on leave just weeks before an election where he is seeking the post.

Republican candidate Charles "Chuck" Mattingly has been placed on leave from his job at the DA's office.

Cameron County District Attorney's Office spokesman Jason Moody confirmed that Mattingly is still an employee with the office but is classified as being "on leave."

The decision to place Mattingly on leave comes about two weeks before voters head to the polls on November 6th.

Mattingly, a Republican, is facing Democrat Luis Saenz in the election.

District Attorney Armando Villalobos lost a congressional bid in the Democrat Party Primary in the Spring.

Villalobos is facing a criminal trial in Brownsville's federal court amid accusations of racketeering and other crimes related to the Abel Limas "cash for court favors" scandal.
