A man caught stealing beer is in critical condition after being shot by a police officer Sunday afternoon.

Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputies were called out to Mile 1 West and Mile 13 North near Mercedes.

Investigators said that a La Villa police officer was chasing a suspect who had stolen beer from a local convenience store.

The officer shot at the suspect multiple times as he was attempting to drive away.

After surgery, the suspect remains critical condition. He is under police guard at this time.

Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Officer Shooting Team is leading the investigation.

Action 4 News will provide new details as more information becomes known.
