Family members of a Lyford teen say they are encouraged after she was taken off life support and is breathing on her own.

The family of Mireya Ortega said their daughter is responding well after being taken off life support on Friday morning.

Ortega was able to breathe on her own, open her eyes and even tried to speak.

The 15-year-old girl had spent several days on life support after a Monday evening ATV accident involving her and seven other girls.

That accident claimed the life of 15-year-old Gabriela “Gaby” Rivera who is expected to be buried on Saturday.

Family members said that so far, they are not letting their daughter watch the news and have not yet told her about Rivera’s death.
