Authorities are investigating a Thursday afternoon accident where a school bus dragged a 4-year-old girl.

The autopedestrian accident happened off Mile 10 North and Mile 3 West after 4 p.m. Thursday.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers are investigating the accident.

DPS state troopers told Action 4 News that the girl was exiting the bus when her backpack got caught on the door.

The bus driver took off without realizing what had happened but dragged the little girl.

Investigators said the girl was scared by the accident but is but only had scrapts on her legs.

Paramedics took her to the Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco for evaluation.

State troopers are continuing to investigate the accident.

Weslaco ISD Superintendent Ruben Alejandro spoke to Action 4 News about the accident.

Dr. Alejando said the bus had just left Ybarra Elementary School and that accident took place a mile and a half from campus.

The driver was immediately pulled from duty and another driver continued with the route.

The driver was taken for a post-accident drug test, which Dr. Alejandro said is standard procedure in any accident involving a district vehicle.

The results are expected to come in Monday or Tuesday.

Dr. Alejandro said an investigation is underway and they will follow all administrative policies.

The driver has been placed on suspension without pay, pending the investigation, which he says is also standard procedure.

The 4-year-old's parents kept her home from school on Friday for observation.
