A San Juan soldier is dead after being killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan.

Family members told Action 4 News that 32-year-old Jose Luis Montenegro died overseas.

The San Juan native died in a helicopter crash that killed him and another soldier on Wednesday.

Taliban fighters are claiming they shot down the helicopter but the incident remains under investigation.

Montenegro was born in the Rio Grande Valley and grew up in San Juan but graduated from Clear Lake High School in the Houston area.

Family members said Montenegro’s father has previously passed away but his mother lives in San Juan.

Montenegro was the couple’s only son.

The San Juan family is waiting to receive Montenegro's body.

U.S. Defense Department officials are traveling from San Antonio to help the family with funeral arrangements.
