Three people are dead and three others remain seriously injured after a Friday night car accident.

The accident happened around 9:30 p.m. on I-37, one mile south of Mathis.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) released the identities of the three people killed, including a 19-year-old woman from Weslaco.

Joanna Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene. She was driving the 2001 Volkswagen that was involved in the accident.

DPS said that a 2008 Honda Fit was driving north while the Volkswagen was traveling south.

The Honda veered into the median, then skid into the left lane of the opposite freeway.

The Honda went airborne and overturned while the Volkswagen slipped off the west side of the road and rolled onto it’s side.

Two people were in the Honda. The driver is listed in critical condition at a Corpus hospital, while the 22-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital.

There were four passengers in the Volkswagen.

Garcia and one passenger, an 18-year-old woman from Corpus, died at the scene.

The two other passengers, two brothers from Alamo, are being hospitalized for their injuries.

Anthony Romero, 20-years-old, is listed in critical condition and his brother, 18-year-old Daniel Romero, is in serious condition.

All six people involved in the accident were wearing seatbelts.

DPS ruled out alcohol, but said that speeding was a factor.
