A Brownsville man behind bars after trying to rob a jewelry store and a bank but left his ID card with the teller.

Investigators told Action 4 news that Gerardo Mendez entered the Wells Fargo Bank off Southmost Road on Wednesday afternoon.

Thinking Mendez was a customer, the teller asked to see his identification.

When she was checking it, Mendez handed her a note.

The note allegedly said Mendez was robbing the bank and demanded $5,000 dollars.

Mendez then allegedly tried jumping over the counter but another teller pushed him back.

But police said the crime spree didn't end there.

Mendez allegedly ran across the street to a jewelry store and made off with a ring.

Officers tracked Mendez down at his home on East 27th Street  and arrested him with the ring.

Mendez appeared before a Brownsville municipal judge on Thursday morning.

Bond information was not immediately available.
