Mercedes Police arrested a man in his 50’s on Friday night for crashing his car into a barricade along Business 83, over the floodway bridge.

The crash happened at about 11:30 p.m. and forced officers to shut the bridge for close to an hour, as they removed the wrecked car.

Sgt. Elias Flores said the man was outside of his car when officers arrived on scene.

He was not injured and refused medical attention.

However, Sgt. Flores added that the driver had admitted to drinking several beers before the crash.

Because the man was not behind the wheel when they arrived, officers arrested him and charged him only with public intoxication.

It remains unclear if the man will face additional charges for the damages caused to the barricades.
