A grand jury has cleared Brownsville police in the shooting death of a Cummings Middle School student back in January.
Members of the Cameron County Grand Jury met on Wednesday where they decided to "no bill" the officers involved in the shooting.
The officers shot 15-year-old Jaime Gonzalez when he came at them with what later turned out to be a pellet gun back on January 4th.
A ‘no bill’ indicates that the grand jury found there was insufficient probable cause to believe that a criminal act was committed.
According to State law, all presentations to, and deliberations by, a grand jury are confidential.
A school administrator called 911 and the Brownsville Police Department and Brownsville Independent School District Police Department responded shortly thereafter.
An eighth grader, Jaime Gonzalez, 15, was then shot by a Brownsville Police Officer after Gonzalez entered the school and was armed at the time with what appeared to be a handgun.
Gonzalez was taken to local hospital Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville, where he was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Kip V. Johnson Hodge.
Cummings Middle School was on school lockdown for approximately two hours.
“My heart goes out to the Gonzalez family,” County and District Attorney Armando R. Villalobos said. “The loss of a child under any circumstances is a tragedy that is unimaginable.”
“Unfortunately, in this day and age of high profile mass shootings at public places, like Columbine, Aurora, and Wisconsin; law enforcement responses to perceived threats can be immediate and deadly,” Villalobos said.
“It’s my hope that somehow this incident can be learned from by the school district, the police department and the citizens of our community to prevent another tragedy.”
