Authorities from across Hidalgo County are searching for a teen reported missing after swimming at a canal south of McAllen.

On Thursday evening, 18-year-old Adrian Frias disappeared among the murky waters of a canal that provides drinking water for much of the McAllen metro area.

The call came in Thursday at about 4 p.m.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office and the McAllen and Pharr Fire Departments responded to canal near Juan Balli Road.

After several hours they called off the search, and resumed early Friday morning.

This time they called in help from the Mission Police Diving Team as well as from the Alamo Fire Department.

Crews were not able to find any trace of Frias by Friday evening.

“We have our recovery crew working to remove the debris that's there and try to find a victim,” said Manuel Vargas with the McAllen Fire Department. “Once they're finished here, they're going to move to the north side of this piping discharge and see if they can find something there."

The search and rescue crews has focused their search on the open waters of the canal.

But they fear Frias may have been sucked into the underground pipes that carry the canal underneath the floodway.

Crews are not able to search the underground pipes because of zero visibility, strong currents and debris inside.

Authorities are advising anyone to avoid swimming in canals or drainage ditches.

They say they're especially dangerous because the murky waters may carry hidden dangers like tunnels or strong currents below the surface that can suck you in.
