The runoff for Texas State Representative District 40 ended with Terry Canales winning his seat at the Texas State Capitol.

The Democratic Party nominee maintained a lead throughout the night where he received 3,209 votes or about 53 percent of the ballot.

Challenger Agustin "Gus" Hernandez trailed behind throughout with 2,849 votes or about 47 percent of ballots cast.

Without a Republican challenger, Canales is expected to coast into office following the November general election.
