UPDATED:

A 17-year-old was rushed to the hospital after she was shot in the head Saturday morning.

Pharr Police Department responded to a 911 call at 6800 Azul Lane around 5 a.m.

As of Saturday evening, investigators reported the girl was in a vegetative state.

Police now have a 19-year-old man in custody who will be formally charged on Sunday.

When they arrived, officers learned that a 19-year-old male had been handling a handgun when it discharged in the girl’s direction.

The 17-year-old was shot in the head and immediately taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Pharr Police Department says she is being hospitalized for life threatening injuries.

The crime is still under investigation, but officers are questioning person(s) involved in the incident.

Pharr Police Chief Ruben Villescas told Action 4 News that the gun handler is at the station to answer questions.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Pharr Crime-Stoppers at 787-TIPS or 1-800-648-TIPS.
