Authorities are working to identify a drug smuggler who was behind the wheel of a mini-van that plunged into the Rio Grande.

U.S. Border Patrol officials reported the driver lead agents on a chase in the rural Starr County community of Escobares on Thursday.

Agents tried to stop the mini-van but the driver turned around and sped towards the river plunging it inside the water.

The driver swam to Mexico but a tow truck got the mini-van out of the water.

Investigators found more than 1,100 pounds of marijuana inside.
