The Chick-Fil-A gay rights debate has come to the Rio Grande Valley.

The University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg has plans to open a Chick-Fil-A restaurant inside its student union.

But the McAllen Monitor is reporting that one student group wants the university to cancel the contract to build it amid a national gay rights debate.

The UTPA Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Alliance told the Monitor that they are opposed to the restaurant.

Chick-Fil-A president Dan Cathy recently set off a firestorm of controversy and created a national debate about gay rights.

Cathy confirmed more than $3 million in contributions conservation and anti-gay groups such as the Family Research Council.

Chick-Fil-A, which is closed on Sundays, has always maintained itself as a Christian business.

UTPA officials told the Monitor that the university “was surprised and disappointed by the comments made by Chick-fil-A’s president,” and that it opposes “discrimination in any form."

No decision has been made but the school told the Monitor that it is looking at its contract with the food service provider that is planning to build the restaurant.
