Rock star Morrissey is set to make his first appearance in the Rio Grande Valley but tickets may soon be hard to come by.
The 1980s and 1990s icon is set to take the stage at the Pharr Events Center on Friday, November 30th.
Concert promoter Arnaldo “Nano” Ramirez told Action 4 News that show sold almost half of their 2,200 tickets when they went on sale last week.
In a musical career spanning decades, Morrissey made a name for himself with his first band The Smiths and later went solo.
The British artist’s hit songs “How Soon Is Now,” “Everyday Is Like Sunday,” “Suedehead” and “Tomorrow.”
First Valley Appearance
Morrissey’s tour is taking him on an unusual path across the United States playing in places like Radio City Music Hall to spots along the border.
Tour dates for Texas include El Paso, Wichita Falls, Beaumont and Pharr.
Although Morrissey has played several times in El Paso, it’s the singer’s first time in the Rio Grande Valley.
The artist behind The Smiths album “Meat Is Murder” only made one request for the Pharr show: a vegan meal.
With only 500 tickets left and a huge fan base in Mexico, Ramirez said the show is expected to sell out.
“The guy could sell out two or three shows down here for us,” Ramirez said.
Memories Of Morrissey

They’re hoping the Morrissey concert is just the beginning of other rock and alternative concerts at the Pharr Events Center.
JR Ramirez said he graduated from McAllen Memorial High School in the early 1990s.
He and his friends would cross the border to go to nightclubs in Reynosa where DJs would play music from Morrissey, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Erasure and The Cure.
“They didn’t get much play on the radio but everyone, all of my friends knew all their music,” JR Ramirez said. “I’m excited. For me, the show is going to be like a high school reunion.”
