The gay community made history south of the border where organizers held the first gay pride parade in the State of Tamaulipas.
Between 800 and 1,000 people gathered for the first gay pride parade in Matamoros on Sunday afternoon.
Organizer Dagoberto Robles told Action 4 News that participants that participants braved triple-digit heat to make history.
"This is the first parade in Matamoros... it's the first in Tamaulipas," Robles said in a telephone interview.
Robles said that participants, who came from several cities in northeastern Mexico, were well-received and treated.
June is known as "Gay Pride Month."
The Matamoros event came one day after a gay pride march in Monterrey and one week before another in Mexico City, which is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people.
Although the event did not draw participants from the Rio Grande Valley or Texas, Robles said that's something they want to improve for next year.
