The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees are calling it quits due to increasing travel costs to play rival teams.
The team made the announcement on Wednesday morning stating that they will not be operating for the 2012-2013 season.
Team President Trey Medlock reported that playing in the Valley was no longer "financially viable" for the team.
The announcement follows the recent foldings of other Central Hockey League (CHL) teams in Laredo, Corpus Christi and Austin.
Medlock reported it was too expensive to travel to play the remaining rival teams in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and across the United States.
“It is with regret that we have come to this point. Closing operations was never our first choice but after the Laredo announcement we took a long hard look and decided that we were left with no other options,” Medlock said. “It was a great nine-year ride and we were ready to continue but it’s just not possible given the current landscape of the Central Hockey League.”
