A group of about 20 to 30 students at UTPA gathered at the university's Student Union on Friday afternoon to watch President Barack Obama's historic announcement on deferred deportations.

"There's a lot of people, especially here in the Valley, who are very hard working, who deserve that opportunity,” she said about Obama’s announcement. “And not only that, but will contribute to our country for the better."

The co-eds were joined on campus by members of La Union del Pueblo Entero, or LUPE, long time advocates of the failed DREAM Act, and immigration reform.

"Were inviting people to come into our offices to learn more about what’s going on,” John Michael Torres said. “As we learn more, we're going to be teaching the community more about it."

Other students like Juan Flores said they were concerned.

He explained that while he is happy with Obama's announcement, and he supports it, Flores worries this latest move could backfire.

"He could hinder the ratification of the DREAM Act because a lot of politicians are disagreeing with him because of what he did," he said.

Nonetheless, Flores and other students welcomed Obama’s announcement, though they believe it is long overdue.
