A mother and daughter are facing criminal charges after they allegedly lied about their car being stolen.

Brownsville police arrested 45-year-old Maria de Jesus Morales and 20-year-old Thanya Morales on Wednesday.

Investigators said the two women reported their 2006 Ford Fusion as stolen back on May 10th.

But detectives learned that the car was not stolen and had been used by Thanya’s boyfriend in a hit-and-run accident.

Both Thanya and her mother were trying to cover up for him by reporting the car as stolen.

Officers charged the two women with filing a false report to a peace officer.

The two women surrendered to police on Wednesday but have been released on $2,000 dollar bonds.

Under Texas state law, filing a false report to a peace officer is a Class B misdemeanor punishable up to six months in jail and/or a $2,000 dollar fine.
