A monkey is headed to the Gladys Porter Zoo after spending weeks on the loose in the Mission area.

Mission Animal Control officials confirmed that the monkey was caught late Monday afternoon.

Officials said the animal was indentified as a patas monkey, which are native to West Africa.

Wildlife experts told Mission Animal Control officers to use pan dulce, or sweet bread, to lure the animal.

The officers placed a trap with sweet bread donated from Foy's Supermarket at an orchard off Mile 2 North and La Homa Road.

The trap successfully captured the male monkey late Monday afternoon.

Patas monkeys can grow close to three feet long but it's not clear how it ended up in Mission.

Officials said the monkey had been living in an area outside city limits for at least three weeks before it moved inside their jurisdiction.

The officials said the animal was being taken to the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville.

The monkey did not harm or attack anyone but caused alarm because they are not native to the area.

Action 4 News will provide more information as it becomes available.
