JP candidate pays past-due tickets, avoids arrest

Justice of the Peace Precinct 5, Place 1 candidate Raquel "Rachel" Menchaca went in to the Harlingen Municipal Court on Monday to take care of had three outstanding warrants.

A Cameron County justice of the peace candidate found herself on the other side of the of the law on Monday.

Justice of the Peace Precinct 5, Place 1 candidate Raquel "Rachel" Menchaca went in to the Harlingen Municipal Court on Monday to take care of had three outstanding warrants.

According to the Harlingen municipal court website, Menchaca was wanted on warrants for having an expired registration, failure to maintain financial responsibility and failure to appear/bail jumping.

Menchaca told Action 4 News that she paid around $3,000 dollars to take care of the tickets.

Harlingen Police Department Spokesman Dave Osborne spoke to Action 4 News about the incident.

Osbourne said normally, when a person is brought in on warrants, during business hours, they are brought before a judge and not made to spend the night in jail.

The Primera-based candidate faces opponents Sallie Gonzales and Ernesto Gonzales in the May 29th Democratic Party Primary.

Under state law, justices of the peace have many duties including perform marriages, oversee evictions, small civil disputes and act as a judge over traffic tickets issued by state troopers.
