Authorities spent early Friday morning tracking tornado activity from central Cameron County, across the Laguna Madre and then out into the Gulf of Mexico.

The first reports of tornado activity came from the Rio Hondo area around 3 a.m. Friday as a weather system with strong thunderstorms moved across the Rio Grande Valley.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers were called out to a tornado in the Laureles area off FM 1575 around 6:40 a.m. Friday.

The National Weather Service in Brownsville confirmed that a funnel cloud came halfway down from the sky but did not touch the ground.

Meteorologists tracked the tornado activity as it moved from Laureles to the Laguna Vista and Port Isabel areas at 25 mph.

Officers with the Laguna Vista Police Department spotted a funnel cloud over the waters of the Laguna Madre just after 7 a.m. Friday.

Web cameras from the South Padre Live Network recorded the storm moving across the bay and then over South Padre Island before moving into the Gulf of Mexico.

No injuries have been reported in connection to the tornado activity while authorities are out assessing the damage.
