A UTB student is out on bond after being accused of a violent rape that took place inside a campus dorm room.
University of Texas at Brownsville police officers booked 20-year-old Abel L. Gutierrez into the Cameron County Jail on Tuesday.
The UTB student is accused of an aggravated sexual assault that took place inside the Casa Bella student apartments.
Court records released on Thursday show that Gutierrez allegedly raped a female student early Sunday morning.
Investigation
The alleged victim told police that Gutierrez raped her and that she told him to stop.
The young woman bit him in the chest but he responded by biting her in the face and punching her.
Officers interviewed the young woman on Monday and took her to the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville for evaluation.
A police noted in the records that that she still had a bite mark on her face, a black eye and a bruise on her neck.
UTB Police Chief Juan Cardoza told Action 4 News that police officers interviewed Gutierrez and arrested him.
Action 4 News does not identify victims of sexual assault but Chief Cardoza said that Gutierrez and the victim knew each other.
Out On Bond
Gutierrez appeared before Cameron County Magistrate Judge Patricia Edelstein on Wednesday where he was issued a $50,000 dollar bond.
Cameron County Jail records show that Gutierrez posted bond on Thursday afternoon.
It’s not clear if Gutierrez has or will return to the UTB campus.
But Chief Cardoza said the Office of the Dean of Students is expected to review Gutierrez’s case and make a decision.
According to the residential life section of the UTB website, the Casa Bella is a 103-unit, 429-bed student apartment complex off FJRM Avenue.
“The new UT Brownsville student housing will be operated by UT Brownsville and will be serving students under a new name this fall with in-house resident advisors and on-site UTB security,” the website quoted UTB President Juliet V. Garcia as saying.
According to the UTB website, overnight guests at Casa Bella are allowed but they must fill out a registration form and must be of the same gender the person they are visiting.
